Steve Spencer - Head Coach - 6th Season
Coach Spencer enters his fifth year at the helm of the Hawks after
serving as the top assistant under Dennis Jones for five years, helping
the program to conference titles as well as appearances in the NAIA
Division II National Tournament each year. Spencer brings a 92-62
overall record as a head coach into this season including an 83-46 mark
as the coach of the Hawks. Holy Names has gone an impressive 54-10 in
California Pacific Conference play under Coach Spencer over the course
of the last four seasons.
Last year he led the
Hawks to their 8th Cal Pac Championship with a 14-2 record. Holy Names
also won the Cal Pac Conference Tournament earning the conference's
automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament where the Hawks lost a
first round game to the eventual NAIA National Champion Northwestern
College (IA). Last year's showing marked the program's second National
Tournament appearance under Spencer and the 9th overall. The Hawks
received an at-large bid to the dance in 2004 under Spencer where they
advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" with a 62-58 first round win over South
Dakota Tech. It was the programs third straight Sweet Sixteen and fifth
overall.
Spencer spent the 2003-2004 season as
the head women's basketball coach at the University of California at
Santa Cruz, a NCAA Division III Independent. Spencer led the Banana
Slugs to a 9-16 record in his one year tenure at Santa Cruz.
Spencer
currently serves as the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions
at Holy Names and has served in many roles within the Holy Names'
athletic department including Assistant Athletic Director, Sports
Information Director, Summer Camp Coordinator and also founded the
highly successful Lady Hawk Hoop Camps which is now in it's 11th year.
A
native of Laytonville, CA, Spencer played his college ball at Mendocino
College in Ukiah, CA. Spencer graduated from CSU Hayward in 1999 with a
BA in Liberal Studies and an emphasis on Physical Education /
Kinesiology. Spencer resides in Oakland, CA with his wife Ruth Flores.
