Oakland, CA - The Hawks took on a Simpson team tonight that surprised William Jessup the night before. Not thinking ahead the Hawks wanted to make sure they took care of the Red Hawks. That is exactly what the Hawks did beating the Red Hawks 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, and 25-16).
In game one Simpson battled with the Hawks exchanging leads seven times in the game. After being tied at 21 a piece the Hawks surged forward and pulled out the game 25-23. Games two found the Red Hawks up early 7-3 when senior Kendra Vasquez served six straight to put the Hawks up 9-7. After a time-out by Simpson the Hawks would come out and build on that lead and never look back winning 25-19. Finally in game three the Hawks were the ones that jumped out to an early lead and by then the Red Hawks could not recover. The Hawks would not make many mistakes and also executed very well in the stretch. Game three found the Hawks winning by the highest margin of the three games 25-16.

The Red Hawks were led by Jenna Chandler who on the night had 9 kills on 13 attempts. Combo setters Nicole Eileen and Jenny Hopkins would combine for 19 assist.

For the Hawks sophomore Ashley Nickell would have a marvelous game with 18 kills on 29 attempts. She placed the ball very well and also hit over the blocks of Simpson defenders. It was great to see the sophomore hit the ball with such authority so late in the season. It is always a great thing when one of your best players is playing her best ball late in the season. Not to overshadow the sophomore, but she was not the only one in the zone as junior Natalie Kasbarian contributed with a game high 32 assists. She placed the ball to her hitters with very high accuracy tonight allowing the momentum of the game to continually go the Hawks way.

Next for the Hawks is Menlo College who finished the regular season 16-9 overall and 12-0 in California Pacific Conference play. The Oaks are the regular season conference champions and the Hawks will look to play the spoiler and win the California Pacific Conference Tournament. The winner of the tournament gets the automatic bid to the Div.I NAIA National Championships in Sioux City, IA on November 21, 2009. The Oaks swept the Hawks in the regular season, but the Hawks look to prove that they are the better team. The Hawks match up very well with the Oaks; from the outsides to the middles, setters and back row players. This will be an interesting match as the Oaks have been waiting this whole week to find out who they would play in the finals. The Oaks received the automatic bye to the Championship game for being conference champs will look to remain undefeated in Cal Pac Conference play. Also, they will look to beat a team for the third straight time, something very difficult to do. This could be the makings of a great weekend for the Hawks.

The game will be played on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Menlo College in Atherton, CA. Game time will be 7 pm.

Come out and support your Hawks!!!
