LA MIRADA, CA: Senior midfielder Ashley Moseley and junior forward Sam David scored goals over a 46-second span in the first half and Biola never looked back en route to a 5-0 win over Holy Names University in a non-conference game Thursday Evening.
The Hawks fall to 1-3-0 overall, with two of their three losses to teams ranked in the top 10 Nationally. The victory for the the Eagles is their second-straight home win and improves their record to 2-0-1 on the season.
Biola opened the scoring in the ninth minute, as junior defender Amy Atkinson launched a ball into the box that was perfectly headed by David to the feet of an open Moseley. The senior then beat the keeper with a quick low shot to give the Eagles the early advantage.
The Eagles wasted little time building on the lead as a Holy Names turnover deep in its offensive zone gave Biola the ball less than thirty seconds later. Moseley then returned the favor with a nifty pass through a pair of defenders to an open David, who scored a nearly identical goal as Moseley to double the lead.
The score remained 2-0 until the half and well into the second until the 58th minute, when senior midfielder Nikki Mathis found junior forward Brittany Barr off a free kick in the box. Barr headed it to the right of Holy Names' keeper for her first collegiate goal and extended the lead to three.
In the 73rd minute, David once again was on the attack and dished the ball to the outside, to junior Zoe Zappas, who ripped a blast into the left corner of the goal from about 20 yards out.
Senior forward Megan Gularte teamed up with Mathis to cap the scoring in the 79th minute. Gularte received a pass in the box and led Mathis with a nice pass. The senior then finished with a quick touch for her first goal of the season.
Holy names was able to muster seven shots on goal, two of which were turned away on solid plays by the keeper.
The Hawks jump right back into action against the the top ranked Lancers of California Baptist University on Saturday September 12th. Kickoff against the nations #1 ranked Women's soccer team will be at 3PM on the CBU campus.
