Oakland, Ca - The Hawks hosted their annual HNU Tip-Off Tournament. This year playing in the tournament was conference neighbor California State University, Maritime, GSAC member Fresno Pacific University, and Cascade Conference member #17 Southern Oregon University.
In the first game of the night CSU, Maritime took on the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific. A much improved Keelhaulers team pressured the sunbirds and took home their third win of the year. Leading the sunbirds were Lauren Westbrook and Alexsis Brown who on the night had 27 and 19 points respectively. Leading the Sunbirds were Keri Stephanoff and Jessica Torrecillas each with 16 and 13 points respectively.
For the second game The Hawks took on the Red Raider of Southern Oregon University. The Red Raiders coming into the game were ranked #17 in the NAIA Div II standings. With 11 seconds on the clock and down 3, the Red Raiders at the free throw line had an opportunity to close the game off, but ended up missing two. The Hawks off the rebound push the ball up the floor and freshman Anitra McCain shot the ball at the buzzer only to see the ball loop around the rim and come out.
The Red Raiders understood what it would take to beat the Hawks. Stop penetration and hold off senior Katie Styles who in her fist game scored a career high 22 points. Styles was held to only 5 on the night. Another problem for the Hawks was foul trouble. Both Jamie-Leigh Ronolo and Marie Vadiscka fouled out of the game which did not help the Hawks push for a comeback late in the second half. Both guards do a great job of pressuring in the front court for the Hawks creating havoc for opponents.
The Red Raiders were lead by Kacki Speer who had game high in points and rebounds with 34 points and 12 rebounds.
Leading the Hawks on the night was freshman Lesley Vodiscka with 14 points and junior Jamie-Leigh Ronolo also contributed with 13 points.
Next in this Tip-Off Classic the Keelhaulers will take on Southern Oregon while the Hawks will face the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific. The Hawks played the Sunbirds in their home opener a week ago and defeated them 76-66. Game times will be 4 and 6PM. Come out and support your Hawks!
