Oakland, CA - Last night the Hawks took on a talented Urban Knight team that had two strong outside hitters - junior Dan Yang and junior Jelena Jakovljevic - as well a solid setter in freshman Melissa Chang.
The first two games found the Hawks on their heels and in shock of the power of the two outside hitters, but in the third game down 2-0 and down 9-11, Coach Dwight calls a time out and tells his team, "I am the only one in this circle who thinks we can win!" That is all the Hawks needed! After taking game three the Urban Knights seems to be the one on their heels and frustrated with Hawks resiliency. The Hawks took game four and in game five had an opportunity to come back from two games down and win, something the Hawks had not been able to do all year. After exchanging points in game five the Hawks tied the match at 9-9, but the Urban Knights were able to get a lead and not look back. The Hawks dropped the game 2-3, but by far this has been the most impressive match for the Hawks. The Hawks showed something they have not consistently all year and that was resiliency, poise, and most importantly CONFINDENCE!
The Urban Knights were lead by juniors Dan Yang and Jelena Jakovljevic who combined had 39 kills on 83 attempts and 27 digs. Freshman Melissa Chang led the game with an impressive 52 assist.
For the Hawks it was junior Rebecca Chase who led the Hawks with 16 kills on 32 attempts, 11 digs, and 10 assist. The junior set/outside hitter had one of her best all around performance of the year thus far. She was instrumental in changing the momentum in game three and consistently hitting through the big clock of AAU. Sophomore Ashley Nickell also contributed with 12 kills on 39 attempts and 8 digs.
Next for the Hawks is William Jessup University who is currently tied in 2nd place with the Hawks. Both teams come in to tonight's contest with a 4-1 record in Cal Pac play. With a win tonight the Hawks will claim sole possession on 2nd place and a chance to redeem their loss to Menlo College, their only conference loss this year. Game time will be 7PM in Tobin Gymnasium. Come out and support your Hawks!
