Berkeley, CA - Today was not your typical day on the field for the Hawks as they took on the Pioneer of Pacific Union. All of the Hawks games thus far have been mostly sunny skies and cool to warm temperatures. Not today! The Hawks took on the Pioneers at The Gilman Fields today with a huge storm taking its course throughout the entire match.
Even though these were not typical conditions the Hawks seemed to be one with the storm as they beat the Pioneers 5-3. From the start of the match the Hawks did not hesitate to score as senior Mustafa Celik scored the first goal of the match 7 minutes in. The senior did not delay to go back for more because a minute later in the 8th minute Mustafa scored a second goal off the hands of the Pioneers goalie.
The Hawks continued the pressure and in the 15th minute senior forward Jonathan Tingaka scored another goal which was assisted by senior Mustafa Celik. The half would finish with the Hawks in the lead 3-0. The Hawks outshot the Pioneers in the first half 20-0 and the Pioneers did not attempt a shot on goal in the half.
In the second half the Pioneers struck first. In the 55th minute sophomore forward Edrei Mauries scored on a corner kick. It did help the forward having 40 mile an hour winds blowing in his favor. Nonetheless, the corner kick was executed to perfection. The Hawks did not waver because two minutes later in the 57th minute freshman midfielder Manuel Brandli scores in the box again assisted by senior Mustafa Celik. The Hawks scored one last time in the 61st minute. The goal came as the Hawks pressured against the wind and freshman Rasmus Larson from the corner kicked in the box and junior forward Liam Whelan chipped one past the goalie.
The Hawks would make one mistake while in the box and somehow managed to score on their own goal. The Pioneers would add one more in the 75th minute as again the wind played in their favor and on a break-away sophomore mid-fielder Daniel Castanaza kicked one passed junior goal keeper Julio Perez.
With their third goal keeper and with treacherous conditions the Hawks still managed to pull off the victory against the much improved Pioneers. With this victory the Hawks move to 5-0 in the Cal Pac 6-2-2 overall and sole possession of first place.
The Hawks finish up the first round of Cal Pac play on Saturday, October 17, 2009. The game will be played at Merritt College at 9AM. The Warrior currently in fourth place in the Cal Pac look to give the Hawks their first loss since the 2006-2007 season. Come out and support your Hawks!
