Holy Names kicked-off their first official 2011-12 home game at Holy Names University's Tip-Off Tournament against the College of Idaho. Holy Names stood their ground throughout the competition winning 83-76.
The game remained dormant from the beginning until HNU sophomore,Soulljah Evans laid up the first basket bringing the Hawks to the top 2-0 against the College of Idaho. HNU found themselves leading 6-2 in the first five minutes on the game. Less than two minutes later C of I had dominated pulling rank brining the score to their favor 17-8. HNU began pecking away closing the score 18-25 with 8 minutes to go in the first half.
Suddenly, freshman Jasmine Grant scored a lay-up (her first collegiate basket) putting the Hawks within 5. Senior point guard, Danika Potestio put up a 3 pointer in the 6th minute followed by Anotonette Capilli's with a basket pushing the score within one point (29-30). Potestio fired up another 3-pointer less than 30 seconds later. Her shot was quickly followed by another 3-pointer from Capilli 35-30. Continuing their run Evans layed-up a two pointer while being fouled, she sank her free throw pushing the score 38-32. The Hawks led at the end of the first half 43-38.
College of Idaho came out fierce in the 2nd brining the score to 44-43 three minutes in. The Hawks quickly recovered their rhythm stepping back up with a score of 55-52. HNU ran with the lead (74-65) with under 4 minutes to go. The Hawks never looked back winning the game 83-76.
Leaders for College of Idaho include; Kylie Hardison with 14 total points, Laura Geis with 18 points and Katelin Shannon following with 12 points. The College of Idaho will play Menlo College tomorrow night at 5:30 in the tournament.
Holy Namws leaders include; Antonette Capili with16 total points, Soulijah Evans with 10 rebounds and 21 points, Britni Renolo with 12 rebounds, and Jasmin Grant with 11 points.The Hawks will hit the court again tomorrow against Biola University 3:30pm.
