Oakland, CA - The Hawks were coming off of a two game winning streak against St. Mary's College and SFSU. They took on the UC Merced Bobcats tonight and added another win to their record putting the Hawks on a three game winning streak. The final score of the game was (25-18, 25-19, and 25-18).
The Hawks came out in the first match with a lot of energy but struggled in executing on serves, kills, and unforced errors. They finished the match with 15 total team errors. This set back did not stop the Hawks from playing as a team and helping each other execute plays. Freshman OH Adam Slattery ended the match with 2 kills, 1 block, and 2 Aces. Freshman OPP/ DS Michael Gomez had 2 kills, 1 block, and 1 dig. Freshman MB Nick Monroe had 2 kills and 1 block. Senior OH Pierson Oyama had an impressive 3 digs in the first match. The teams serve, receive, and pass percentage was a 90% for the match. The Hawks teamwork helped them to seal the win over the Bobcats (25-18).
The Bobcats came out in the second match even more prepared for the battle against the Hawks. The hawk's defense was not ready to defend the Left handed outside hitters of the Bobcats. The bobcats outside hitters were able to hit past the Hawks defensive blockers almost every play. But the Hawks battled back stronger with their offense and proved that they were a force to be reckoned with. The match was tied 17 - 17, until Freshman DS Gabriel Ching came in the game serving 3 straight aces and went on a 4 point scoring spree putting the Hawks up at 21-17. The Hawks won the second match (25-19).
Before the third match started, the Hawks strategy was to focus on minimizing their unforced errors and staying disciplined. The Hawks passed a 76% in their serve, receive, and passing game which is one of their weakest percentage for serve receive. On the positive side they were able to cut down their unforced errors to 10 total team errors. The Hawks offensive had been a very powerful aspect through the entire match. The bobcats were no match for the Hawks unstoppable offense which led to the Hawks win (25-18).
Standouts: Freshman OH Adam Slattery ended the game with 10 kills, 1 block and 3 aces. Junior OPP/Setter Colin Harper ended the game with 8 kills, 8 assists, 2 digs and 2 blocks. Junior Setter Nicholas Kalustian ended the game with 22 assists, 1 kill, and 2 aces. Freshman DS Gabriel Ching ended the match with 4 aces and served 9 total points for the Hawks.
