Oakland, CA - Holy Names University hosted a strong Oregon team in their first home match. Hawks take down the the Owls in 4 leaving them with a 2-4 record, (26-24,25-23, 21-25, 22-25).
Hawks came out to play Oregon Institute of Technology early on sunday. Going into the match the owls had already defeated three teams in the Hawks conference which made the win even sweeter for HNU.
First set of the game the hawks pulled up a five point lead against Oregon but the Owls came back to take the game into extra points winning the set 24-26. Holy Names University started the next three games in a 5 point deficit which cuased them to have to play catch for the next three sets, having to fight back the hawks pulled the win when Ashley Nickell and Samantha Miller went back to serve.
They both had strong enough serving to force the Owls to make emergency plays winning the second set 25-23. The third set was a crucial win for the hawks. They again started the game five points down but that was until Rachel Vartanian came thruogh when she had four blocks in a row. Hawks won the third set 25-21. The last and fourth set was played beautifully by both teams, but in was HNU'S outside hitters and their amazing defense that won the game 25-22. Samantha Miller led the team with 18 kills and Ashley Nickell followed with 15 kills. Both Miller and Nickell came up with 20 digs each. The hawks hit over .500 percent the entire game.
HNU went even higher in kill percentage when the Hawks hit .833 in the fourth set Oregon Institute of Technolgy's Megan Christensen had an outstanding 20 kills and their setter Sarah Svendin had 32 assists.
Hawks improved the record to 2-4 and now take on West Coast Baptist on Thursday at 7:00 in the Tobin Gym.
