Belmont, CA - The Holy Names Men's Soccer team started their preseason game schedule with a visit to Notre Dame De Namur. The game, played through 73 degree weather, consisted of three thirty minute periods. The hawks, having lost 8 players through injuries sustained during the first week of preseason training, ended up losing the tie to an organized outfit. However, the score line could have been much different had Holy Names managed to convert the various chances they created throughout. The first third went 1-0 to the Argonauts with the second being tied 0-0 before Notre Dame found the net once again in the last third to put the score line to 2-0.
Both sides started the game brightly trying to obtain the upper hand with possession with the early advantage going to Notre Dame. This advantage resulted with a goal on the 17th minute when a long ball from the right back position caught the Holy Names central defenders flat footed. This allowed a fifty-fifty opportunity between the goalkeeper and the opposing striker who produced a neat finish into the far right post. The hawks bounced back creating dangerous chances. One notable play came in the 24th minute when Diego Orellana directed a floated free-kick into the Argonauts penalty area. The defense failed to successfully clear the ball from danger and Holy Names' defender Shea Whelan drove the ball against the opposition's crossbar. The first third ended 1-0 to Notre Dame.
The second third saw Holy Names progress from where they had left off from the previous period, obtaining more possession and chances. However, from nine shots that the Hawks produced, none were dangerous enough to find the back of the net and level the score. The main player leading this surge from Holy Names was Liam Whelan with five shots, followed by Diego Orellana with two, and Shea Whelan and Doug Alves with one. Doug Alves produced a magnificent free-kick on the left edge of the Notre Dame 18-yard line directing his shot on the right corner of the crossbar. Mathias Wold had a standout game at the back for the Hawks limiting Notre to one shot during this period. The third ended 1-0 to Notre Dame.
The final third Holy Names were unable to find the space and produce the penetrating passes to obtain an equalizing goal. The well organized and disciplined Argonauts managed to produce a display similar to the first third where they had the upper hand in regards to possession. Fatigue started to be evident among the Hawks and this was punished in a counterattack play when the Argonauts were able to get more men forward and score their all important and crucial second goal in the 84th minute. This managed to kill the momentum that the Holy Names side had been generating and ultimately the game. Play ended with a 2-0 result going to Notre Dame.
The Hawks next game finds them on the road taking on CSU Stanislaus on August 27th at 7.00pm. The venue for this contest will be the Warrior Stadium, let's go Hawks!!!!
