Oakland, CA - Hawks Head Coach Nick Lusson is proud to announce the 2010 recruiting class for the Holy Names University women's soccer program. Says coach Lusson, "I believe these five players will make excellent additions to our already stellar squad, and the future certainly looks bright for Hawks soccer". The 2010 Hawks finished with a 10-9 record after playing a demanding pre-season schedule that featured three of the nation's top-ten NAIA programs.
The Hawks then went on to win the Cal-Pac conference, and featured five 1st team All-Conference players, and two 2nd team All-Conference players as well as four out of the five individual awards (Defensive MVP - Melissa Grimmond, Newcomer of the Year - Sabel Maguire, Freshman of the Year - Britney Machado-Potestio, and Coach of the Year - Nick Lusson). Lusson added, "The best part about it is that we're returning so much of our team, having graduated out only three players this past year. So this team is pretty loaded in every position for the Fall and we have high expectations for ourselves. With the addition of our new recruits to the mix, the competitiveness in practice will be through the roof, making this a tough team to play for, and a tougher team to play against."
We begin with India Pleasant. India comes to HNU from Fontana, California where she was part of the Diamond Ranch High School team as well as the Eagles SC GU-17 Premier club team. As a Panther in high school, India, played the forward mid-fielder position and lead her team in scoring. She placed 1st Team All Miramontes League, 1st Team Sunkist League, and was the MVP of her team. She led her Panthers to a league championship in the 2009-2010 season.
India's accomplishments don't stop here; as a member of the Eagles club team, in 2008 she helped her team reach the Spring Far West Regional League Semi-finals. Also in 2008, her team was the Eagles Cool Classic Champions, Surf Cup Semi Finalist, placed 2nd in the Coast Soccer Premier League, placed 3rd in the Far West Regional League, Surf College Cup Semi-Finalist, and North vs. South Premier Champions. Lastly, in 2009 she helped her team to the Spring Far West League Finals, Cal South National Cup Finalist, San Diego Surf Cup Finalist, US Youth Soccer National League, and Region IV Semi-Finalist.
Coach Lusson is excited about the addition says, "India will be an excellent addition to the potent HNU attack that featured the league's two leading goal-scorers last year. We believe that her combination of technical skills, athleticism, and big-game playing experience puts her in a position to make an immediate impact for our 2010 squad. Her playing experience for a nationally-recognized program like the Eagles SC will certainly help to raise the standard for the HNU program."
Next is Kayla Kaleiohi, who comes to us from San Diego, California where she played for Sycamore Academy High School. She also played for the Albion SC Club Team as a Center Midfielder.
As a player she helped her team her team win the USYSA Regional's two years in a row, was a finalist in the National Cup 2007, and the Albion Cup Champions in 2008 and 2009.
Coach Lusson had this to say about this stand-out: "Kayla's work rate and toughness as a midfielder will be a huge asset to our team and will certainly help to raise the competitive bar on the team. She comes from an excellent club program and has the tactical awareness and on-field leadership skills to be a very promising collegiate center-mid. Kayla is another recruit with a lot of big-game experience and the ability to quickly step into the collegiate level of play and make a strong impact."
Lina Lovgren a defender/midfielder from Boras, Sweden played at Backangsgymnasiet High School. She also played for the Byttorp IF 1st Division Soccer Club. Lovgren has participated in three different camps with the Swedish Youth National Team and is currently attending the National Soccer academy.
"Lina comes to us from the same top-notch player development program that brought the standout Swedish freshman Linda Wik Fors to our team last year. We expect big things from her in her ability to be a technically gifted flank player, working in both the attack and defense. She comes highly recommended from her coaches and her playing experience in the 1st Division in Sweden and with the youth national team will be extremely valuable," say Coach Lusson.
Kassy Angel who played for the Spartans of Grace M. Davis High School and the Heat of U-18 BFUT Academy, as a midfielder/Forward, helped her teams the CYSA-North State Cup Semi-Finals, Ajax Winter Invitational Semi-Finals, Nomads Thanksgiving Champions, Hannah Welker Memorial Champions. Kassy was a 2 year captain and a 3 time MMC All-League player.
Coach Lusson comments: "Kassy is a dynamic attacking mid that will certainly help to add a real spark to our team attack this year. She's a playmaker that combines excellent technical ball skills with field vision and a possession-oriented style of play that fits in well with the HNU system. A scrappy and tough player, she brings the kind of heart and toughness to the field that will make her a certain success at HNU."
Lastly, Ayana "BB" Brumfield, who was a goalkeeper for the East Bay Art High School - San Lorenzo High School Soccer and also played for the Castro Valley United U-19. Ayana was a HAAL All-League 2nd Team as a junior and 1st Team as a senior. She recorded 13 shutouts in her recent U-19 season leading her team to a 16-4-3 record and 2nd place finish.
"BB is an extremely gifted athlete that combines the ideal size and physical build with the quickness and agility to become a top-notch goalkeeper at the collegiate level. She has a real passion for the sport and her work ethic and positive attitude will certainly add a lot of fuel to the competitive fires of the HNU program. She's coming in behind our standout senior captain Sabel Maguire, and we expect BB to grow quickly and develop into a huge asset for the Hawks," Coach Lusson stated.
The Hawks will have every opportunity next year to re-peat as California Pacific Conference and with the addition of these five new recruits the Hawks feel really good about the upcoming season.
