Heading into the NAIA National qualifier on April 19th, coach Greg Hutton knew the importance of taking home a victory. At stake for the fifth ranked Hawks, was an automatic bid to the 2010 NAIA National Championship. With a field that included four teams ranked in the top 20 nationally, Hutton knew that there were a number of teams gunning for the Hawks. "We have had an incredible season and were most likely going to make the national tournament despite our win this week. Prior to the tournament, however, I reminded our guys that we didn't want to let the fate of our season be decided by the national committee"
In the first round the Hawks definitely made a statement to the rest of the teams, shooting 298 (+10) led by Stephen Edman's three under par 69 and Garrett True's 73. Robbie Bendorf and Daren Johnson both shot 78 followed by Austin Fink who shot 80. The Hawks first round score was good enough to open up a seven shot lead over The Masters College.
With near perfect weather and a bit of confidence after round one, the Hawks were determined to build their lead at the end of day. As round two concluded, the Hawks shot 296 to build their lead to 20 shots over Cal Baptist. The 2nd round, Daren Johnson led the Hawks shotting two under par for 70. Stephen Edman shot 74, Garrett True and Austin Fink both shot 76, and Robbie Bendorf finished with an 80.
At the end of day one the Hawks shot a two round total of 594. #16 Cal Baptist shot 614 to sit in 2nd. With a total of 618, #21 CSU San Marcos and The Masters College were tied for 3rd place. Rounding out the top five was #8 Point Loma who shot 625. Individually, three Hawk golfers put themselves in position to win the individual title. Stephen Edman led the way at 143 (69, 74) followed by Daren Johnson who shot 148 (78, 70). Cal Pac player of the year Garrett True was in 3rd place shooting 149 (73, 76).
Heading into the final day with a 20 shot lead, the Hawks were ready to go out and try to build on their lead. Unfortunately, Mother Nature decided to bring rain and heavy winds, delaying play for more than four hours. When final round play began, the Hawks were ready. Stephen Edman and Garrett True both carded 74's, followed by Robbie Bendorf's 80 and Daren Johnson's 83. Austin Fink rounded out the Hawks with an 85. As a team the Hawks shot 311 to take the team title and Stephen Edman took the individual title by six shots over HNU's Garrett True.
"The guys played great on a tough golf course. We were the only team to break 300 on day one, which definitely put us in great position going into the final round, " said coach Hutton.
On May 18th, the Hawks will head to the national championship in Silvis Illinois. With 9 wins in15 events, they have compiled more victories than any other program in any division in the United States. And with potential First Team All Americans Stephen Edman and Garrett True leading the way, the Hawks have a very real chance of the winning the National Championship.
