Oakland, CA - HNU had to go extra innings in game 1 to control the William Jessup Warriors on Wednesday evening. . The game was scoreless until Jessup scored two runs in the 5th inning to go up on the Hawks.
HNU fought back one run at a time with senior Jessica Merriam providing a critical RBI, driving in Alexis Moctezuma to account for the first Hawks run. Sophomore Kara Ferguson drove in two runs in the effort, with the game winning RBI in the 9th for a walk off single to end the game, resulting in HNU winning 3-2. Ferguson made her first appearance in conference with 3 hits in 4 at bats to lead the team. The game was highlighted by an outstanding pitching performance by junior Markie Benavides-Talbott. She went the distance striking out 7 with only 1 walk.
The Hawks didn't let up and scored early game 2 with sophomore Lacey Parodi and freshman Laurel Clough driving in freshman outfielder Alexis Moctezuma and second baseman Jessica Merriam in the first inning. HNU scored a single run in the 3rd and three runs in the 4th to go up 6-1. Freshman Allison Snider had two hits, a run scored and an RBI to lead the way. Lacey Parod also had two hits and an RBI, with Clough providing a hit and two RBI's. Some excellent defensive plays made by Parodi, Moctezuma and junior Melanie Verrico also highlighted this contest with all three making diving catches for critical outs. The Warriors put up a single run in the seventh to make the final score 6-2. Sophomore Stephani Fairclough had a solid outing, going 61/3 innings, allowing only the two runs.
With the win the Hawks move to 15-17 on the year and 6-2 in California Pacific Conferece play. Next for the Hawks is Patten College. Games will be played Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Thrashers Park in San Leandro, CA. The game times are1 and 3pm.
