SIOUX CITY, Iowa - There were a combined 56 fouls and 70 turnovers, but Briar Cliff (Iowa) battled out an 87-65 victory over Holy Names (Calif.) Thursday at the 19th Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.
In a game where there were a total of 165 total shot attempts, both teams had their fair share of opportunities. It was the Chargers that would make the most of theirs. The Hawks on the other hand only shot 25 percent from the field which gave Briar Cliff many rebounding chances. The Chargers cleaned up many of those boards, snatching 73 rebounds on the game, 29 of those being offensive. Holy Names did manage to grab 22 offensive rebounds, but could not do much with those extra possessions.

Once you make it to nationals, one thing you have to be able to do is, not turn the ball over. Holy Names finished the game with 37 turnovers, and to do that against a team that has the nation's leading scorer, all you do is give her more possessions.

Briar Cliff's win its 26th of the season and eighth in first-round play, earns the Chargers a spot in the second round against Cedarville (Ohio) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Holy Names exists in the first round for the third time in the last four years.

The Chargers led for the entire game, holding a 21-point edge to close out the first half and was up by 25 at the five-minute mark in the second stanza. Liz Grider, the nation's leading scorer, had 11 points during the opening 20 minutes and went on to finish the game with 20 points. Morgan Brown was the game's top-scorer with 22 points, connecting on 3-of-4 attempts from 3-point land. Crashing the boards was Megan Salcedo with 13. Briar Cliff's shooting was well below its season average of 46.3 percent with a 33.3 percent outing against the Hawks.

Lesley Vodicska logged 19 points in the losing effort for Holy Names and Suman Bains came off the bench to score 13 points. Alexandria Gonzalez snagged 11 rebounds. The Hawks finished the game shooting a mere 25.9 percent (21-of-81).

The Hawks will lose Katie Stiles and Larisa Nakasone, but will return a young team next year with much more experience.
