Oakland, CA - After giving up 110 points to Simpson, a team that only scores 60 points per game, you know it was their night. When playing in these tournament games it is all about who wants it more, who can do the intangibles, well tonight it was the Red Hawks of Simpson University outscoring the Hawks 110-101.
After shooting 63% from the field and 50% from the arch in the first half you hope that with pressure defense that would not happen in the second half. For the Hawks that nightmare actually happened. After giving up only 29 points in the first half in the two games during the regular season the Hawks give up 54, 6 points below the Red Hawks average in the first half.
The second half was more of the same, Simpson wanting to win more than the Hawks and it showed as they shot 68% from the field and 83% from the arch. It is impossible to beat anyone who shoots that well or better yet allowed to shot that way!
Traditionally the Hawks play good team defense, but tonight they seemed to revert to bad habits. After countless missed charge attempts and lay-ups scored by Simpson, the Hawks were no match in the end for the red hot Red Hawks.
On the night Simpson's five seniors scored 104 of the Red Hawks 110 points. That will never win games! Leading the night was senior guard Jason Stubbs with 36 points 13 rebounds on the night. Jason Stubbs and Dwight Bond also chipped in with 21 and 20 points respectively. Sparks also contributed 10 rebounds.
For the Hawks it was forward David Scott with 22 points, 5 rebounds and Johnas Street with 18. Josh Smith and senior Ben Clyde round off the double figure scoring for the Hawks with 17 and 10 points respectively.
With the loss the Hawks drop to 11-20 on the year, they finish 9-3 in conference and 0-1 in post season play. This is an improvement from last year's 7 total wins last season.
The Hawks who only lose two players and are surrounded by sophomore and juniors will look to continue to improve and hopefully learn how consistently win the right way!
