Going for the kill!
Going for the kill!
Saint Charles, MO - Holy Names University first match up of weekend was against the defending national champions Lindenwood University. The hawks put a good fight with their strong offense and defense but due to errors they lost in 3. The box score was 30-17, 30-21, 30-23.
The hawk's offense was led by freshman middle Mott Schweitzer as well as sophomore setter and opposite Colin Harper. At the beginning of each game the hawks led but due to missed serves and errors the momentum was lost and the hawks had a hard time bouncing back. Lindewood's consistency was a key factor in the game and because of this they came out on top. Defensively the hawks libero Jayme Hanan led with digs as well as serve receive. Other key players of the match were outside hitters James Holloway and Jeff wolf each with a positive hitting percentage. The holy names university hawks stayed with the national champions for most of the game which in itself was a great accomplishment. The game vs the defending champions was an eye opener and allowed the team to see where they are in comparison to the national champions.

The hawks team primarily consist of freshman and sophomore players where as the national champions lindenwood had much more experience with only 2 freshman and 3 sophomores all of which didn't have starting positions. The hawks played hard but with less unforced errors they may have been able to defeat the Lindenwood.

The second match of the tournament was vs. number 8 Missouri Baptist. Once again the hawks led at the beginning of each set but due to errors their moral was brought down and lost in 3 16-30, 22-30, and 26-30. Schweitzer as well as James Holoway led the hawks with kills, James with 10 and Mott with 12.

Defensively the hawks opposite and libero Colin Harper and Jayme Hanan led with 7 and 5 digs. Missouri's service game was very difficult to match up against. Due to the tough serves the hawks had a hard time running plays as well as having a consistent offense. Jayme Hanan, Jeff wolf, as well as James Holloway received most of the serves with 66 passes between all of them and only 5 errors. Between the hawks defense they had 4 blocks 2 by Joey Ballesteros and Mott Schweitzer as well as one by Colin Harper and one by Ryan Zieman. The hawks fought hard for the win but in the end Missouri ended up winning and the hawks fell for the second time at the tournament.

The hawk's third match they switched their rotation so that Joey Ballesteros who usually plays outside hitter was now their opposite. The change in rotation helped the hawks go to 4 sets with Clark University who is number six in the nation. The first set the hawks played almost flawless volleyball and because of this they came out on top 30-28. After the first set Clark realized their match-ups and adjusted to the change in offense and ended up taking the next 3 games from holy names. Key players of the match were Joey Ballesteros, Jeff wolf, as well as both middles Ryan Zieman and Mott Schweitzer. Both setters Nick Kalustian and Colin Harper played major parts in the success of the hawk's offense. The defense was lead by libero Jayme Hanan. The hawks put up one of the best fights of the tournament first Clark the box score was 28-30, 30-14, 30-26, and 30-21.

On Saturday the hawks began playing number 10 in the nation Graceland University. The hawk's strategy slightly changed which was to allow the middles Ryan Zieman and Mott Schweitzer to establish themselves so that our outside hitters could go up against only one blocker. Although this was the plan due to the lack of tempo it became difficult for the setters as well as the hitters to set up and play, and contact the ball. Other problems consisted of missed serves and lack of communication by the hawks. Although Graceland's offense was a key part of their victory it was not anything that the hawks could not handle. The games continued to be close and the hawks remained on top till the last stretch of each set. The hawks lost the match 24-30, 27-30, 20-30. After their fourth loss of the tournament they went home with the determination to improve and prepare for their next match against university of Santa Cruz as well as Cal.
