Atherton, CA - Conference basketball can be tough. Not only do you have to be ready to battle, but also be able to be composed through-out the game. The Hawks were rattled in the end and the Oaks escaped with a 66-67 victory.
The first half found Holy Names veering from the game plan. What has gotten the Hawks success in the first six games of conference has been tenacious defense and execution on the offensive end. Holy Names was fortunate to only be down 8 in the first half after being out rebounded by 11, and allowing the Oaks to shoot 56% from the field and 40% from the arch. Junior guard Julian Harris was able to give the Hawks many problems scoring a game high 23 points.
The Hawks were able to start the second half on a 10-4 run to cut the Oaks lead to 1 (46-47). At the 12:16 mark Holy Names would finally get a one point lead after steal from Patrick Turner and jumper by David Scott. The Hawks would lead by as much as 3 points, but the Oaks surged back and tied the game at 62 a piece at the 3:36 mark. For the next three minutes both teams would be unable to get stops and would fluctuate leads. Finally with :32 seconds left Julian Harris would hit an open jumper and put the Oaks up by 1 (66-67). The Hawks would have an opportunity to win the game, but in the end were unable to execute the play drawn up during their timeout.
The Hawks just could not get stops, and would give up many offensive rebounds in the last 5 minutes of the game. A lesson the Hawks will have to learn on a tough loss. In all the Hawks gave up 10 offensive rebounds.
The Oaks were lead by Julian Harris with 23 points and Nick McCullar chipped in with 13 points.
David Scott would finish with 22 points and game high 10 rebounds. Johnas Street, who in the first half had 14 points, finished the game with 16.
With the loss the Hawks go to 6-1 in conference and 8-17 overall.
The Hawks will go on the road again, this time to Bethany University. After defeating the Bruins by 30 points earlier in the year the Hawks will have to play in one of the toughest places to play in conference. The Bruins defeated the Hawks last year in both meetings at home, one of those wins coming off a very questionable call at the buzzer.
