Oakland, CA - It's funny how things work out! The Hawks, who were 2-15 before starting conference, were picked to win the California Pacific Conference. With competition against some of the nation's best Holy Names has figured out one thing, and that is how to win. Since the 2-15 start the Hawks have won 6 of 7 games including the win tonight 68-66 over William Jessup University.
The game started with the Warriors setting the tempo, jumping on the Hawks 4-12. After a brief time out by Head Coach Dennis Jones, Holy Names would come out and return the favor by picking up the defense and find ways to score. The Hawks would finish the half on 29-11 run. Holy Names seemed to be out of sync in the first half and still manage to be up 10 (33-23) on a very good William Jessup team.
The second half would start with junior guard Johnas Street hitting back to back threes and giving Holy Names their biggest lead of the game at 14. Senior guard Jason Washington would not let Jessup down. Washington would find ways to get to rim constantly and often. After two free throws by Washington the Hawks lead was cut to 10. Holy Names would quickly respond with an offensive rebound by senior forward Paul Conyers and kick out to Zac Sewitsky for a three pointer which increase the lead back to 13. The Hawks would increase their lead to 16 before the Warriors started making their run. Behind guards Tevin Hurd, Kadeem Kristen, and Jason Washington the Warriors would make a surge and cut the Hawks lead to 2 (64-62) with 3:30 left in the game. Holy Names would respond with a 4-0 run, but only to see William Jessup have a 4-0 run of their own. With :12 seconds remaining the Warriors had one more chance to tie or win the game. Holy Names would make the Warrior guards play faster than accustomed to forcing Kadeem Kristen to shoot a fade away three pointer as time expired. The shot would hit the left side of the rim and come off, giving the Hawks the victory.
Senior guard Jason Washington lead the Warriors with a game high 23 points. Kadeem Kristen also chipped in with 14 points of his own.
For the Hawks it was Joshua Smith, who is recovering from an illness, finished the game with 14. Johans Street contributed with 11 points of his own including 7 rebounds. The Conference leading scorer was held to only 9 points tonight. With the win Holy Names moves to 8-16 on the year and 6-0 in conference play.
Next for the Hawks is Menlo College. Holy Names defeated the Oaks at the start of the month 70-63.
