Oakland, CA - Holy Names University made quick work of the Red Hawks of Simpson University for the second time in less than twenty-four hours. Simpson, in the ladder half of their program's debut weekend, showed signs of improvement, but were still unable to keep up with Holy Names.
The Hawks were able to use this opportunity to use different rotations and put players in different positions. Sophomore Jayme Hanan, normally the team's libero, had a strong outing as an outside hitter with five kills and nine digs. Leading the hawks Saturday was sophomore James Holoway with seven kills. Outside hitter Kyle Fitz led Simson University with four kills.
Holy Names swept the match 3-0. At no point in the match were the Hawks threatened by Simpson University. Even in the third game, where Simpson made their strongest push and even led by three early, it was only a matter of time before the Red Hawks' lack of experience caught up. Holy Names quickly squelched the potential rally and finalized the match with a 25-15 game three win.
In the end, this weekend was little more than friendly competition that in fact benefited both programs. Simpson University gained experience and certainly showed signs of improvement Saturday inside Tobin Gymnasium. As for the Hawks, they were able to shake off a long offseason and gain a feel for the new members of the team, which they will certainly need as they travel to Missouri this week to battle defending national champions Lindenwood University Friday morning.
Following the sweep, the Hawks stand at 2-0. However, without a conference, they will need to do more than a weekend sweep of a debut club team to qualify for the NAIA National Tournament. That is why the Hawks have filled the remainder of their schedule with powerhouses such as Hope University and California Baptist University.
