Oakland, CA - When it comes to conference play the Hawks are use to one thing, and that is WINNING! In the programs history the Hawks have only lost 17 games in 194 contests. Last Thursday they picked up their 18th loss to the Keelhaulers, but were able to get back on track by defeating the Red Hawks of Simpson University 63-59.
With six ties in the game the much improved Red Hawks were able to give the Hawks a scare.
The game started with the Red Hawks striking first after a jumper by Dominique Simmons. They would add three more free throws to start the game up 5 against the defending Cal Pac Champions. The Hawks would respond with a 9-0 run of their own and at the 11:46 mark lead the Red Hawks 9-5. Elizabeth Thomas would make two free throws to cut the Hawks lead to 2 (9-7). After the third tie of the game (15-15) the Hawks would finish the half on an 8-3 run and go into halftime with a 5 point lead (23-18).
The second half opens up with the Red Hawks striking first. The Hawks would quickly respond with a 12-5 run (37-27) and a 10 point lead in the game. After an exchange of baskets the Hawks would manage to hold a 12 point lead, but the Red Hawks were far from done. The Red Hawks would go on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 41 apiece. With 9:58 left the Red Hawks would manage to take the lead 41-42, but the Hawks quickly respond with a 10-0 run and go up by 9 (55-46). The Red Hawks quickly responded with an 8-0 run to cut the Hawks lead to 1 (60-59) with 23 seconds left in the game. The Red Hawks would have a chance, but after two consecutive turnovers the Hawks would capitalize. The Hawks finished the game at the free throw line as the Red Hawks attempted to foul the Hawks to get extra possessions, but it would back fire as the Hawks make their free throws and put the Red Hawks away.
Leading the Red Hawks on the night was Paige Barrett and Kylie Shaw with 12 points each. Alyssa Foster would chip in with 11 points.
For the Hawk it was Lesley Vodiscka who finished the game with 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assist, and 3 steals. Also chipping in was Jamie-Leigh Ronolo with 12 points and 5 rebounds on the night.
With the win the Hawks move to 3-1 in conference and 11-10 overall.
Next for the Hawks are the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz in a double header with the men on Tuesday at 5:30pm.
