Oakland, CA - Holy Names University is proud to announce that Nick Lusson, head women's soccer coach, has been voted the 20009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NAIA Western Region Coach of the Year.
He'll be acknowledged for this award at the upcoming NSCAA national coaching convention in Philadelphia in January. This award comes on the heels of his recent honors as the 2009 California Pacific Conference Coach of the Year. Coach Lusson just finished his second season with the Hawks, this year compiling a 10-9 record. The 2009 squad had a banner season, winning the Cal-Pac Conference championship and qualifying to the program's first ever appearance in the NAIA national tournament where it lost to the #5 nationally-ranked Concordia University of Portland, eventual tournament semi-finalists.
The team also featured the Cal-Pac Defensive Player of the Year, Melissa Grimmond; Cal-Pac Newcomer of the Year, Sabel Maguire; and Cal-Pac Freshman of the Year, Britney Machado-Potestio; as well as 5 players named to the 1st team, 2 players on the 2nd team, and 2 honorable mentions.
Coach Lusson has certainly had a major impact on the women's soccer program at Holy Names. Arriving to the position in 2007, he was greeted with a squad of only 8 players. From there he's gone on to build a deep 25-player squad featuring top-level recruits from the Bay Area, Southern California, out of state, and even internationals. He credits his success to the highly committed and well-bonded players on his squad, as well as the excellence and dedication of his assistant coaches. The future looks bright for the Hawks, as they're only graduating out 2 players from their 2009 squad going in to next season. Coach Lusson holds a USSF "A" license, as well as three Master's Degrees in Sport Psychology, Sport Management, and Exercise & Sport Performance. In addition to his position at Holy Names, Coach Lusson is the Technical Director for the nearby Dublin United Soccer League, staff coach for the Nor-Cal State ODP team, a coaching educator for both California Youth Soccer and the Positive Coaching Alliance. He currently lives with his wife of 3 years in San Ramon.
Our congratulations to Coach Lusson on his well-earned success!
