Oakland, CA - The Hawks came in to tonight's contest riding a three game winning streak and after tonight they made four in a row. The Hawks defeated the Div. II Academy of Art - San Francisco Urban Knights 70-60.
The scored seems close but the Hawks manage to be up as much as 22 points in the second half with 8:53 left. The game started with the Urban Knights' Sondra Stilwell hitting an open three pointer. The Hawks would answer quickly as Sarah Henning would rebound and score for the Hawks. The Urban Knights would attempt to press the Hawks and would see some success from it as they would build a lead with 12:00 left in the first half 16-22. After the Hawks returned the favor to the Urban Knights and pressured them, the Hawks would also see success making a run themselves and with 7:57 the Hawks tied the game at 22 a piece. The Hawks pressure would pay dividens as they finished the half on a 16-6 run and close the half up 10 (38-28).
In the second the Hawks would come out and continue pressuring the Urban Knights. The Urban Knights would pull within 10 with 16:21 left in the game before the Hawks pressure once again pays off. The Hawks go on a 16-6 run and pull away 60-40. After shooting no free throws in the second half the Urban Knights had an opportunity to close in from the free throw line, but would go 7-17. The Urban Knights did manage to cut the lead to 10, but it was a little too late.
Leading the Urban Knights tonight was point guard Sondra Stilwell with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Also chipping in was Jessica Nolan and Lorraine Ethchell with 13 and 10 points respectively.
The Hawks finished the game with four in double figure led by junior Suman Bains with 14 points. Katie Styles and Lesley Vodiscka each chipped in with 10 while Jamie-Leigh Ronolo had 11 on the night.
With the win the Hawks go to 7-6 on the year.
Next for the Hawks is California Baptist University tomorrow night in Tobin Gymnasium at 4pm.
