IRVINE, CA --- After defeating the Royals the night before, the Hawks looked to battle against a tough Eagles team. The Game finished with a total 9 players in double figures, but it was Concordia who finished with 5 in double figures and posted a 77-70 win over the Hawks in non-conference play Saturday night.
The Hawks managed to have a great half and led by the half 41-38, but the Eagles came out firing on all cylinders early in the second half, with junior guard Patrice Hunter nailing a trio of three-pointers in the first 4:40 to make it a 55-46 Concordia lead.
Hunter, who hadn't made a field goal in five first-half attempts, finished the game with a team-high 14 points and grabbed five rebounds in the process.
The battle of the boards was mainly won on offense, with Concordia pulling down 34 offensive rebounds en route to out-rebounding Holy Names by a 64-40 margin.
Concordia also hit 29 free throws, including seven from junior forward, who finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Junior center Lindsey Kingsland racked up a game-high 10 boards and scored seven points--all in the first half.
Senior guard Kayanna Nichols, meanwhile, ended with 11 points, while senior forward Jen McDaniel scored 10 points in just nine minutes off the bench.
The Hawks had brought the score to within five points, on a layup from Suman Bains to make the score 59-54 with just under 12 minutes left in the game, but McDaniel hit two shots in a row, and junior guard Nicole Fu notched a free throw to make the score 64-54 in favor of CUI.
Carney went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe with 4:26 remaining to make it a 13-point game, at 72-59, and the Hawks scored each of the game's next 11 points, making it a 72-70 contest with 35 seconds to play.
The Eagles made only one field goal within the game's final 8:42, a jumper from Carney that made the score 75-70 with 18 second left in the game.
The Hawks who finished the game with four in double figures were led by Jamie-Leigh Ronolo with 16 points on 6-10 shooting. Also chipping in was freshman Lesley Vodicska and sophomore Whitne' Blackburn who on the night had 14 and 12 points respectively.
Next for the Hawks is their Thanksgiving Tournament on November 27th and 28th. The Hawks open up with Azusa Pacific University at 6pm, and on the 28th have a rematch against the Eagles of Concordia University.
