Fullerton, CA - After a tough two losses in Oregon, the Hawks travelled to Southern California to take on the Royals of Hope International University. The Hawks managed to create a good lead in the first half and build on that lead in the second half, beating the Royals 66-56.
Seven seconds in to the game, the Hawks (3-3) scored an easy layup but the Royals (2-2) responded with 15-1 run to take a 12 point lead at the 12:26 mark. Six points from Lycans-Roy and 5 points from Hood keyed the run.
The Hawks found their three point shooting and answered with a 10-2 run which included 3 made three pointers.
At the four minute mark, the Royals held an eight point lead. But 1:07 later, the Hawks had turned that deficit into a two point lead at 30-28 as they rained in two more threes. A three pointer helped the Hawks increase their lead to four at the break.
Hood hit a layup in the early going of the second half followed two made free throws by Lycans-Roy to bring the game even 35-35. Before the Royals knew what hit them the Hawks had stretched their lead all the way to 14 in just five minutes- on yet two more made three pointers.
A few minutes later, the Royals started to chip away at the 14 point lead. In less than three minutes they were within two points (51-49) on the strength of their only two made three pointers of the night- one each for Sophomores Lauren Salazar and Lindsay Salazar. They were money from the free throw line during that time frame as well as they knocked down 6 of 8 free throws.
However, the rest of the night the Royal could not string together two consecutive free throws while the Hawks hit 9-10 free throws down the stretch to take the game. The Royals also shoot pretty horribly from the arch connecting 2 of 23 a low 8%.
The game saw a total of 59 turnovers lead by the Hawks with 31.
On the night the Hawks shot 32% from the field, 45% from the arch and 73% from the free throw line. Leading the Hawks on the night was junior Jamie-Leigh Ronolo who had a game high 18 points on 6-15 shooting and a team high 5 rebounds. Also chipping in was Junior Marie Vodicska with 10 point and 4 rebounds.
Next for the Hawks is Concordia University-Irvine, game will be tomorrow night at 4pm.
